This flag is a representation of the Midway Islands, which is located between Tokyo and Hawaii. The bird located in the flag symbolizes the unique and rich seabird population. The country consists of two major islands, which import all their goods. Midway is best known for the historic World War II battle between the United States, and Japanese Navies. Baldwin shaped his scope based on thought and experience. As a young man growing up in Harlem, he was faced with obstacles that made him consider his place in the world. What made Baldwin so singular was his viewpoint. He was a small, unassuming, unattractive black man—and to top it all off, he was openly gay. Baldwin bravely defied the times by reverently expressing himself, boldly unmasking and exposing the issues surrounding race, sex, and identity. Some of Baldwin’s most notable works include: Go Tell It on the Mountain, Notes of a Native Son, and Blues for Minister Charlie.

Caribana

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MyYigW_UNzQ/SmeDdDWoFOI/AAAAAAAAAG4/-nKoHbzM-SE/s320/Caribana.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361398416547517666" />

Caribana is home to one of my most beloved cities--Toronto, Canada. My first experience with Toronto was as a 13-year-old. Being from West Indian descent (Jamaican, and Bermudian) my family wanted to expose me to my culture. At that time, the only thing I knew of the northern city was Vince Carter.

After hopping of the QEW, I immediately fell in love with the multi-cultural city.
As we approached the Caribana parade, I remember seeing the most beautiful women I had ever seen in my 13 years of life- which naturally intensified my love for the city. Needless to say, that trip gave me new found respect for Canada.

Fast forwarding 10 years, I have been back to the city several times, discovering the nuances, soaking up the culture, all while repeatedly recapturing that initial feeling.

The fesitval known as Caribana is an annual celebration of Caribbean culture which is held every year in the T.O. Commenced by immigrants from Trinidad & Tobago and other Carribbean countries, the event has been a staple for Toronto since 1967. Far from a domestic event, the world has embraced the festival attracting more than 1 million visitors. A joyous street parade equipped with floats, flags, and fine women caps the festival. Big up to the T.O.
As a young man in transition, chivalry has always been a spotty topic. I often thought that since I was raised by a woman, then I would automatically know how to treat one-- I was WRONG. Being raised by a strong black woman, I never really defined chivalry for myself. I often went off what others (generally females) told me, as to what it meant to display chivalry.

Females and males alike told me things such as: opening car doors, walking on the outside of the sidewalk, pulling up the car, introducing her to people, and calling to see if she got in safely . Indeed, I believe all of those before mentioned things exemplify the act; however, as I continue to explore the facts, as well as myself, I am learning some fundamental things about the topic. Things that have both, reaffirmed and redefined what chivalry really means to me.

Chivalry originated from the medieval time period. Back then, the word was associated with knighthood, and the merits of honor and courtly love. Today the word is mainly linked to considerate acts towards women. In fact, due to often misuse of the word, throughout time, the real definition seems vague.

So I looked to others to help me gain perspective. I was told by one female, that a man should open up doors for ladies out of respect. Point well taken, I consider myself respectable, so I did so. In the very next breathe, I heard that same young lady call another female a b*tch. So I am thinking, you want me to respect you and other ladies, yet you disrespect other women?

Another example, I attempted to pattern myself after an older fellow, whom I admired from afar for the way he treated women. I mean my man was SMOOTH. Did, and said all the right things. All up until I figured out he had like 20 girlfriends and was lying to all of them.

Perplexed by what I’ve seen and heard, I choose to define chivalry for myself. The definition started not with a girlfriend, an opened car door, or a formal introduction. No indeed, I looked no further than my own household to try and find what chivalry meant to me.

I found that the way I wanted my sister, as well as my mother treated, is the way that I am going to choose to treat all women. As simple as that.

In all my imperfection, the women that I love will serve as my illustration and lay the blueprint for how I will treat all women. I would suggest that philosophy to the rest of my fellas--because you can’t lose.

It’s ironic that we will fight over somebody disrespecting our mother’s and sisters, but yet, will quickly disrespect somebody else’s mother or sister.

The fact of the matter is good guys may not open doors, and bad guys may, but the truth lies within that man’s intent. Fellas, don’t feel pressured to do anything that you are not ready to do. Be genuine in your intentions, there are no set rules! Do yourself a favor though and don’t listen to what other people tell you to do, take the time to get to know how you want to treat a lady, and apply your own rules. Actions without meaning can be dangerous. They lack significance and if that be the case, then what’s the point? Peace.

Bebe's Kids

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MyYigW_UNzQ/Sl5MBBUMReI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/O-0jItGhTgc/s320/bebes_kids.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358804187034174946" />

For your viewing pleasure, I bring to you, hands-down the funniest cartoon movie of all-time!-- Bebe's Kids!. With an all-star cast that included classic funny people such as: Robin Harris, Faizon Love, and John Witherspoon (Pops) cartoon or not, this was one of my favorite movies of any genre. I commend Robin for puttin up with those little heathens, because if it had be me-- Jamika would have gotten the D-E-U-C-E-S!. They don't make movies like this anymore. Ohh I bet you didn't know they had a Bebe's Kids video game for Super Nintendo. I rented that joint! Classic. In this material world that we live in, very few people realize that respect, not money, makes this world go round. You see, respect fuels all of the decisions that we make. Generally, things that we don't respect, we don't do, and things that we do-- good or bad, we proudly proceed in doing. Throughout time, respect has been longed for; resulting in many people crying, lying, and dying in search of it.

Juice, follows four street savvy friends from Harlem, appropriately named "The Wrecking Crew". Using the world as their playground, the crew lives life care-free, and has fun doing it. Until one day the antagonist Bishop (played by Tupac Shakur)botches a petty robbery attempt at a convenient store and kills the cashier. Following the robbery, Raheem, who is the leader of the group attempts to take the gun from Bishop, who still in his rage, kills his fellow crew member and friend Raheem.

With the remaining crew members in shock, Bishop quickly goes from friend to enemy as he threatens to kill the other two crew members (Q and Steele) played by Omar Epps and Jermaine "huggy" Hopkins. The plot thickens as tensions rise between Bishop and the other 2 crew members.

In many cases, respect can be substituted with the words: acceptance, cool, or approval. I learned that all of those things start from within. You don't have to prove anything to anybody. This film illustrates the lengths that some go to, to validate themselves and gain respect. Often times yearing for that feeling forces people to act out of character and attempt to be something there not. But in this case, and many others similiar, it comes with a heavy price.

James Van Der Zee

Vanderzee's decadent style helped capture the essence of the Harlem Renaissance. What makes this song so special is; she is able to say in song, what she could not justify in her mind, and could not mend with her heart. Emotionally composed, her words are straightforward, and thought-provoking. Whether or not you have ever been in this situation, the words take you to a place where your forced to undergo her experience.

I guess that is why I now listen to music critically, because I know what "good music" sounds like. I can't just listen to anything; because I just don't wear anything, and I just don't eat anything-- the day you lose your integrity, is the day you lose yourself. People often get upset that Lauryn is no longer making music, but I feel like good music is timeless, and the brilliance of this album is enough to satisfy me forever. This was more than an album, this was her everything, and I understand that.

It could all be so simple
But you'd rather make it hard
Loving you is like a battle
And we both end up with scars
Tell me, who I have to be
To get some reciprocity
No one loves you more than me
And no one ever will

Is this just a silly game
That forces you to act this way
Forces you to scream my name
Then pretend that you can't stay
Tell me, who I have to be
To get some reciprocity
No one loves you more than me
And no one ever will

Hook:
No matter how I think we grow
You always seem to let me know
It ain't workin'
It ain't workin'
And when I try to walk away
You'd hurt yourself to make me stay
This is crazy
This is crazy

I keep letting you back in
How can I explain myself
As painful as this thing has been
I just can't be with no one else
See I know what we got to do
You let go and I'll let go too
'Cause no one's hurt me more than you
And no one ever will

Repeat Hook

Care for me, care for me
I know you care for me

There for me, there for me
Said you'd be there for me

Cry for me, cry for me
You said you'd die for me

Give to me, give to me
Why won't you live for me
(Repeat)

Culture Shock: Do The Right Thing

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 215px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MyYigW_UNzQ/Sj-szJJnGEI/AAAAAAAAAE0/UWpUlLENYOg/s320/do_the_right_thing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350184876968974402" />

The reason for posting this is two-fold. The irony, was the June 19th, 1865 date came approximately 2 ½ years after the Emancipation Proclamation; which was drafted to free all slaves in the confederate states. The Juneteeth holiday is important because many confederate states; (Texas being one of them) did not acknowledge the proclamation, and continued with the practice of slavery. The Western- Texas slaves, whose master’s still obeyed confederate regulation, were not granted their freedom until union forces arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865.

What Goes Around Comes Back Around

You never get anyway with anything. I think as it pertains to fashion, there is a popular misconception. While the two are linked; they are not the same. You see, being fashionable is merely keeping up with the latest trends in fashion, you know-- coping the latest Gucci shoe, or LV Bag. However, being stylish is a totally different conversation. Style is a form of expression that is particular to your character. That said; is there a way to do both? The answer is absolutely. When done in harmony, you are, by society’s standards; a trendsetter.

One of the most influential trendsetter’s known to fashion is Japan’s Hiroshi Fujiwara. Fujiwara is considered the G.O.A.T. Unable to tie him to one title, Hiroshi can rightfully be addressed as: the minister of Harajuku culture, which was one of the catalysts to Japanese street culture. Hiroshi is the man behind iconic Japanese brands such as FrangmentDesign, Electronic Cottage, GoodEnough, and Head Porter.

Fujiwara, similar to Kanye West, was a college dropout. After doing 3 weeks at the world famous Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, Fujiwara decided he was finished. Ironically enough, fellow Japanese fashion icons Nigo (A Bathing Ape) and Jun Takahashi (Undercover) served as his apprentices after they completed their courses at the college.

Fujiwara became a musician and was part of the new form of expression that was taking place in Japan during the 80’s. Young Japanese teens began to catch wind of Punk Rock from the UK, and Hip Hop in the U.S.; and decided to make self expression their # 1 priority. Upon hearing the new sounds, the teens began to let the music transform the way they lived—-particularly the way they dressed. At this point Fujiwara was already performing in various Japanese hot spots in Harajuku, which was and still is a melting pot for Japanese cultures. Enthralled in these new found forms of expression in Harajuku, Hiroshi decided to enter a fashion contest; in which he placed first. The reward was getting to travel to New York and London, which channeled his attention towards fashion.

Upon returning to Japan, Hiroshi became a representative for STUSSY, and helped introduce the label to the Japanese market. Once surfacing into the fashion industry, Hiroshi decided it only right to create his own brand. In 1990, Hiroshi started the Electronic Cottage brand. Electronic Cottage burst on to the scene. Fujiwara used his prominence as a DJ, to market and distribute the brand. He basically invented the “limited edition” style of marketing which kept consumers waiting, and wanting. Since Electric Cottage, Fujiwara has left smoke clouds in the Japanese fashion world; innovating, and starting a plethora of other decorative brands. As an avid magazine reader, I am surprised to see how the topics back then were much more interesting and engaging reads. Topics like "How Europe's Women Make Love", "Harvard's Negro Student Leaders" and " Why Brownskin Girls Get The Best Movie Roles". These types of topics were not only thought provoking, but were equally as entertaining. Though in black in white, the imagery was vivid and descript, seeming to capture the true essence of that very moment.

That said, one thing that I found disturbing about the imagery was the lack of color, as it pertained to African American women. With each cover that I skimmed through, I witnessed the same "prototype" black women. Fair skin, Long hair, straight nose. These portrayals instantaneously let you know what images were socially acceptable. The inside cover of the magazine featured hair straighting products, and skin bleaching ads. Moreover, considering that Jet was, and still is an African American owned and operated magazine you can't help but to question the mental of black people during this time.

Taking it a step further, I began to evaluate how African American women are portrayed in modern media. I would be lying if I said that the lightskin/darkskin issue does not still exist, and in looking in the media, somethings remain evident. I am not prepared to make a blanket statement, however I think it is safe to say 59 years later; the more things change, the more they stay the same. Think about it.

Jodeci - Stay

The quintessential foursome, in my eyes, and for those who grew up in the same era; Jodeci defines R&B music. Much like Earth Wind & Fire, and The Isley Brothers were to my folks; the quartet gave you countless hits that still reverberate to this day. The group, was compliled of two sets of brothers which combined their personal names, to form a group name. Joel "Jo-Jo" Hailey, and Cedric "K-Ci" Hailey; and Donald "DeVante" DeGrate, and Dalvin DeGrate, hence the name(Jo-De-Ci). Needless to say, Jodeci paved the way for the 112's, Jagged Edeg's, and the Day 26's. Places like New York, Atlanta, Florida, and California all have there own distinct sounds. Whether it’s New York’s grimy drums thuds or California’s classic synthesized hum. Personally, I know when I think of hot producers I automatically think of Virginia. With instrumental producers such as Teddy Reilly, Timbaland, The Neptunes, and Danjahandz; Virginia has displayed their versatility in genre and style and always seem to a produce quality ear-catching product. V.A. has definitely placed its name atop the Hip-Hop production hot spots.

Producer/Engineer, Noah “40” Shebib is quickly entering the T-Dot into the conversation. With a tranquil type of bop that is foreign to the traditional hip hop track; the Canadian bred producer is making his presence felt. With the success of Drake’s So far Gone Mixtape, in which the producer boasts 8 spotless tracks ( Brand New, Sooner than Later, Lust for Life, Houstatlantavegas, Successful, A Night Off, The Calm, and Bria’s Interlude).

With Shebib making waves, others are beginning to notice, and are requesting his services. His upcoming projects include Sizzla, Buju Banton, Trey Songz, Kardinal Offishal, and Little Brother to name a few. I grew up following the Cavs, and I am from Cleveland. I love the Cavs, despite how this post may look, I am only doing this out of love. The city, the fans, and the haters need to hear this. Now that the mushy ish is over, let's put everything out there.

To the fans: Despite how you may feel about it Ben Wallace, Z, and Wally Szerbiak are all STEALING MONEY!the fact that they are making $14,500,000, $11,000,000, and $13,000,000 is shameful. I know that I broke The AP style book guidelines on writing numbers, but the people need to see exactly how much these individuals make. It is a down right travesty and as a fan, I can't take this anymore. The fact that these semi-productive, passed their prime, almost bald, aint-gettin-any-younger, gray-hairs-growing-in-the-fro, players are making this type of money is simply laughable. The Cavs have lacked a true post presence since Brad Daugherty. The fans have been disillusioned into thinking that "Z" is sufficient. In the words of one of my early basketball coaches " If you cant play D, you cant play for me!" and "Z" can't guard the door!. The fans need to realize that Cleveland will NEVER, be able to compete for a championship without a legitimate post presence, it's as simple as that. How many disappointing finishes is it going to take until the organization realizes this. Let's put it in proper perspective. 2006-2007,50-32, lost to Spurs in NBA Finals NO POST PRESENCE. 2007-2008 45-37, lost to Boston in Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, NO POST PRESENCE, 2008-2009, 66-16 * LeBron wins MVP, Lost in Eastern Conference Finals, STILL NO POST PRESENCE. I just don't understand why we continue to torture ourselves. Considering our need for a big, and all of our current big men being free agents in the next 2 years, we need to package all of our big men, and get in the 2010 Chis Bosh/Amare Stoudamire sweepstakes. In particular Stoudamire. We even could jockey for positioning in this years draft for Arizona's Jordan Hill, or UConn's Hasheem Thabeet. If we must continue with this "center by committee" attitude, at least get someone who can block shots. In my humble opinion you don't necessarily need a center because the game is really changing and the traditional center is pretty much extinct. That said, what differentiates a "Big Man" from every other position on the court is that player's ability to score in the post, block shots, and rebound. By definition the Cavs bigs only complete the rebounding category and it's half-ass. In Essence LeBron is our center at 6"8" because he does all 3!
CLEVELAND I IMPLORE YOU GET A BIG MAN, AND GET ONE FAST! THE CLOCK IS TICKING

The second piece is dedicated to the reigning NBA Coach of the Year, Columbus, Ohio born Michael "Lip Smelling" Brown. Again, I am doing this out of love. lol. I respect whole- heartedly what Coach Brown has done for The Cleveland Cavaliers this past season. He was able to do what Paul Silas, and Randy Whitman were not, and that is establish the Cavaliers as a perennial powerhouse in the NBA. With that in mind, Mike Brown's ability to coach and strategize takes a back seat to the talent that is LeBron James. The fact of the matter is championship players need championship coaching. Bottom-line. When the player begins to rely solely on what he feels is right for the team, you have lost respect and control. In the Magic series, and the Boston, and San Antonio series before, we lose. If I see the Cavs run that same rinky-dink offense, that inevitably forces LeBron to go 1-on-5 everytime we are in trouble. If that Junior Varsity offense persists, I am going to buy LeBron a one way ticket to New York myself. I don't want to throw Mike Brown completely under the bus because this is his first coaching job, and he is forced to win a championship. But it is becoming more and more evident to me that it was not coaching that won us 66 games. The synopsis is easy. Either you get with it, or you get lost, and with 2010 fastly approaching, I know which direction I am leaning.

To the fans, DO NOT PANIC. We have been a powerhouse in the NBA for 4 years now. Seek refuge in knowing how far we've come. Do not begin to get caught up in this 2010 talk. We have, in my opinion the best player in the NBA playing for us. Relax. Championship teams are built, and we still have a little bit left. Don't begin to write shit all in the newspaper, and feed into the b.s. that the media is spreading. All that would do is force LeBron closer to the door. Continue to support our team and address the real problems that exist with the team. Don't be sore losers and start talking all this shit about the Cavs, we need a big man, and better coaching period. Leave it at that.

And lastly to the haters, I saved this part especially for you:
For all you other dudes throwing shots at the Cavs, you only get half a line, KISS MY @SS!
Damn Right.

Entry Level Grind

Paranoia wakes me out of my slumber as I unwillingly open my eyes, and remove my head from the perfectly molded pillow. A long sigh; followed by a pronounced groan as I remove myself from the “just right” temperature that has been created beneath the sheets. Before stepping foot out the bed, I quickly locate the remote and turn on the T.V. I am greeted by the sounds of Stuart Scott providing commentary on last night’s game. I begin listening before placing eyes on the screen. Stretching my arms and getting to my feet the grind begins.

With a kidney full of Grey Goose from last night’s happy hour, I immediately proceed to the bathroom to water the snake. Feeling refreshed upon my exit, I make my way to the closet and carefully gaze at the clothes. My stare is intense. As if I look at them for long enough, they will change colors.

In evaluating the pieces that I already know are there, my 1-on-1 chess match with my closet begins. Looking at the brown ring around the collar of my favorite white shirt, I kick myself for not washing it, and think it to be trifling if I repeat the shirt in it’s unwashed wrinkled state. While navigating through my closet, I begin to invent today’s color scheme. As I begin to get dressed, I realize how resourceful my style is. I pat myself on the back for how well I work under pressure.

I scurry to the car, remove Drake’s So Far Gone mixtape from the deck, and promptly put on The Russ Parr Morning Show. Again, I kick myself for not getting gas last night. Already running late, I hurry to the gas station and hesitantly put $ 7.00 dollars in the tank. I rapidly peel off assured that 2 ½ gallons is more than enough.

I approach the freeway, and am welcomed by “Parking Lot” type traffic, accompanied by a medley of honks and beeps from irritated drivers who know they are going to be late to work. To this scene I am all too familiar; I de-escalate and join my fellow commuters.

Transitioning from the freeway to the city streets, my surroundings drastically change. I enter the Northeast quadrant of Washington DC, and immediately begin to connect with my people. Amid car radios blasting, and hard stares, I view young kids laughing and joking as they walk to school;and observe elderly ladies as they patiently wait for the bus. While refreshing, the experience is equally humbling. Continuing down the block, gentrified neighborhoods come into sight. High priced condos next to aged row homes, graffiti ridden liquor stores, next to Victorian architecture, the picture is unsettling. My thought process confused to how anguish and prosperity exist in the same setting.

The gates of Howard University mark the end of my journey, the feeling you receive when entering Howard is a special one. After parking my car, I throw the overweight security guard the deuces, and he reciprocates. I enter the building and board the elevator with several colleagues whom exchange half-hearted hellos, coupled with in genuine body language. The discomfort of being in the workplace written all over their faces. The elevator bell rings indicating that I have arrived at my destination. An exchange of flirtatious smiles takes place between me and the secretary, I graciously keep it moving. Vibrant and confident, I enter my office 6 minutes late. Greeted by my supervisor the look on her face tells all, she is obviously unhappy. As I sit down at my desk, and begin to open several “I thought I told you” style email’s, I recline my chair, place my hands behind my head, and reflect on the entry level grind.

112 Anywhere

I probably did not have any business sing along to this song back in the 8th grade, however this did use to be my jam. 112 produced countless middle school and highschool bangers. Before King James, and Post Magic Johnson, Penny was that 6" 7" combo guard that had that pick- your- poison type of game. Hardaway rarely disappointed as he stuffed the stat sheet night-in and night-out. The Memphis native, and University of Memphis legend, Hardaway captured the attention of the basketball world with his seemingly uncanny ability to do it all.

Rocking the classic Orlando colors, Penny made #1 the object of every young ballers affection. Whether it was an in- and- out spin dribble no- look dime, pulling up for 3 in transition, or getting his steps together to dunk on you, simply put Penny was "like that"

Off the court, Hardaway was equally as good. Scoring multiple endorsements, most namely his seven digit deal with Nike. With the exception of the Almighty Air Jordan's; His "Air Penny" line was at the top of every kids Christmas and birthday lists. Not stopping there, Penny-mania spilled over to the silver screen.

In the film Blue Chips, Penny played highly coveted recruit Butch McCrae. In the film Penny teamed up with real life teammate Shaquille O'Neal. Hardaway also had a series of Nike Commercials featuring himself and "Lil Penny", a doll with Chris Rock as the voice ( I had a lil penny doll by the way, lololol).

So why are we not talking about Penny Hardaway you ask? Despite his rise to greatness, from 1999-2008 Penny's career was plagued by injuries. Bouncing around from team to team Hardaway's excellence had all but been forgotten, as year after year his season were cut short by a plethora of different injuries. Though his efforts were admirable, and he still managed to put up decent numbers, his career never lived up to it's initial promise.

Yet and still Penny Hardaway is and always will be one of my favorite players. Nothing to serious, just a vodka and cranberry and some conversation. My day went from one phase to the next, but one thing remained constant. It is the same thing that made me start this blog, move to dc, and allows me to work two jobs in which I have no particular incentive outside of money to perform. This constant, this force, this vigor, is ambition.

The feeling is completely self induced, and derives from many different things. It is fueled by negativity, and failure. Allowing the space to formulate the ideas that will springboard me into obtaining my goals. The force never sleeps, never gets bored, and has a voracious appetite for satisfaction and complacency. So much so that the energy only wants to make it one way, and will accept nothing less than that. The Strength needs no company, as it is not a team player. In this game there is only room enough for one. A Kobe Bryant like approach is taken toward life, with an understanding that there are many different ways to make it. However a emphasis is placed on making it the way in which designed. The hunger is unapologetic to those who want to take credit for something that they were not responsible for. The vigor is selfish and selfless at the same time. Motivated and inspired by the spirit of others. Irritatingly independent, at times the notion of help seems foreign. Loyalty is paramount. Not only to others but to personal belief. For this, the character is able to rest knowing that integrity is priority. Admittedly impatient, readiness to move sometimes deters fruition.

So as I lay my head this night, with a ll these thoughts on my mind, I am encouraged with the direction of tomorrow. The burning fire that resides within serves as a constant reminder. As the architect of my success, with an impeccable blueprint in hand, I am crafting a sky scraper that is sure to reach the clouds.

Ambition is pure, ambition is real, ambition is me.

A Thin Line Between Love and Hate

A real classic. Touching on topics such as acceptance, racism, sterotypes, and sexuality, the film spares no emotion when it comes to illustrating the reality that many encounter as college freshmen. Since college is a microcosm of society, Higher Learning expresses what many face in the world.

This film goes to show the timelessness of the issues we face. The same concerns that have plagued college campuses in 1995, are still relavant in 2009. Take a look at this clip. The most notable being Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, which premiered in Utah, at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006. Beyond Beats and Rhymes was aired on the PBS series Independent Lens, and garnered major attention capturing more than 1.3 million viewers.

Hurt also includes activist to his many titles. Through his voice, as well as his actions, Hurt has attempted to tap into the way people perceive race and gender.

He has also served as a gender violence prevention educator. Hurt has been down for the cause since his college days as quarterback for the Northeastern University football team. While there, Hurt along with others found the Mentors in Violence Prevention(MVP) program, which is a college-based rape and domestic violence prevention initiative for college and professional athletics.

As a result of his extraordinary perspective, Hurt has been embraced by numerous media outlets such as The New York Times, The Source Magazine, and Entertainment Weekly to name a few.

In my opinion we need more people like Hurt, to not be afraid to confront cultural norms that in many ways plague our community Check out the clip.

</object

Nutty Professor: Club Scream Scene

Honestly, this is one of the funniest/ saddest scenes that I have ever watched. Upon Barber’s resignation from the board, he purchased what was then farm land and began to develop the space. Barber hired architect James H. McGill to begin building the homes. Between 1873 and 1877 there were 50 homes constructed. McGill named the neighborhood after successsful real esate broker LeDroit Langdon.

McGill crafted the homes using Victorian architecture, which was heavily used throughout the construction of many big cities in the U.S. and abroad. Cities like: London (UK), Chicago, Toronto, Richmond (VA), Boston, San Francisco, Grand Rapids, Glasgow (UK), Manchester (UK), all boast this elegant architecture.

With tree lined streets, and distinct shrubbery, LeDroit Park was designed to be an exclusive White’s only suburb of Washington D.C. Fully equipped with security guards, and a gate to fence in the community. This intentional segregation was rather ironic due to its location. The neighborhood borders Howard University which is a historically black university, additionally; LeDroit Park was surrounded by blacks who resided in bordering neighborhoods. After many failed efforts to try to integrate the community the tension became too thick. In 1888, Howard University students broke down the fences to LeDroit Park, which proved to be quite symbolic.

Upon tearing down the gates, in 1893 LeDroit Park welcomed its first black resident, Mr. Octavius Williams, who was a barber at The Capitol. Soon after Williams moved in, others followed. So much so, that by the 1940’s the once exclusive all white suburb was now an affluent all black neighborhood, where prominent blacks of that time resided. Martin was, and still is one of my idols, and back then I wanted to be just like him. I used to study and memorize all his jokes. From Hakeem Olajadome- to Wevie Wonder, I know them all. However, I believe my interest in Martin derived from the 3rd grade when I had an altercation with Mr. Marquel Patton. Here is the story:

As many of you may know growing up your joke game had to be on point. If your mom bought you a jersey with somebody who did not play for that team anymore, it was NOT considered a throwback! Back then it was considered generic! and you were going to get it.

I distinctly remember getting some buddies (AKA, no- name- brand shoes). As soon as my mom bought me the shoes I already knew what it was. The next day she tried to send me to school with the buddies and I strongly protested, but she was not trying to hear that. So she demanded that I wear the shoes and sent me off to school. It was a VERY slow walk to school that day. With every step I took, I looked down at the no- name- brand buddies. If I could have went to school bare foot that day, I would have!

My nervousness grew as I approached the school. I was intentionally late that day to avoid the basketball game that I played with my friends before school. There was no way that I was about to hoop in Air-Buddies! I eagerly entered the school, not saying a word to anyone and quickly sat down at my desk to hide the buddies. I breathed a collective sigh of relief. I was safe.

The buddies were hidden under the desk, everything was OK. As the day progressed I forgot I had the buddies on. I was laughing and joking and carry-on and everything seemed cool right? WRONG! As 12:00 hit I forgot about the most social part of the day, lunch! As my friend commenced me for lunch I began to sweat bullets. My heart was beating a mile a minute as we walked to the lunch room to stand in line. My friend asked me "Man you look sick, are you alright?" Truth be told I was shook knowing in the back of my head that somebody was going to call out my buddies.

However, It had been 4 hours without a word from anybody, my confidence gained as I thought about my status in the school. I was a star at Riveredge Elementary. I was a star in the talent show, and won the pattle-tennis,and hot-shot competitions at field day. I did not even know why I was trippin, I was good.

As soon as I began to breathe easy, I began to hear chuckles, then I heard a voice scream out "AWWW HELL NAW". As I turned around I saw my rival, Marquel Patton. I knew that I was about to get it. Man, he went so hard on my buddies the whole line was dying with laughter. He attacked my buddies from all angles, and sent me back to class with a salty face! In fact, I was salty for the rest of the year, hell I still fell a way about that day.

I tell you that story to say that from that point forward I knew I had to have some jokes. So I studied Martin, and watched show likes Def Comedy Jam, Comicview, Wayans Brothers, and Jamie Foxx.

While alot of my material was original, I also read books. One of the books I studied was called SNAPS. For those who don't know, SNAPS was a joke book that had some of the best jokes from all the famous comedians. I remember being so excited when I got Snaps 3 for Christmas ! (LOL). After I got my joke game up it just was not fair, The kids at Riveredge Elementary, and Roehm Middle School were not safe. I used to be able to go toe-to-toe with anybody.

Anybody who tried to pull my card was getting ranked on, and I had material for days. Momma Jokes, House Jokes, Clothes Jokes, Shoes Jokes, you name it, I had it. However, my specialty was HEAD JOKES, and LOOK-ALIKES! man I could go on for days on somebodies head (No Homo). While I still can go toe-to-toe, admittedly I have lost some of my luster. At 23, I might get into a rank session and get embarrassed, and for the record I am ashamed to admit that.

At any rate, I want to take this time to commemorate rank-sessions, as well as snaps, for making me the man I am today. Ya Dig.

Erykah Badu-- Otherside Of The Game

Back when Dre 3000 and Erykah was kicking it. Marriage

Committed Relationship- No Definition Found

Marriage- Is a social, spiritual, and/or legal union of individuals. This union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks its beginning is usually called a wedding and the married status created is sometimes called wedlock.

Boyfriend- Is a person's regular male companion in a romantic or sexual relationship, which falls short of a long-term committed (eg. marital) relationship.

Girlfriend- Is a term that can refer to either a female partner in a non-marital romantic relationship.

Husband- A man who is married.

Wife- A married woman.

When it comes to relationships, I think my man from the Stylistics with the high voice said it best when he led in the song with “ Tell me what’s wrong with you now, tell me why I never seem to make you happy, though heaven knows I try, what does it take to please you”. While in this particular song it is a man talking to a woman, we all know that in relationships either person can find themselves echoing this sentiment.

For anybody who has ever been in a relationship, I challenge you to answer this question:
What is the difference between a committed/serious relationship and marriage? And don’t try to cop out and say a ring, because we all know, that the ring alone is not good enough (LOL). I am looking for somebody to tell me what the different dynamics of a serious relationship opposed to marriage are.

For example, things like honesty, loyalty, responsibility, commitment, and trust are all things that are supposed to constitute a relationship. I understand, and agree to that. However the question I raise is; are there different levels to these principals? And if so what are they? In today’s society I am confused on the difference between the two, and when I ask people what those differences are; they look at me with this “Ohh Damn” face.

Granted, there are a lot of things that the two share, but I guess what I am searching for, are the differences. Work with me on this one.

Sometimes in life you develop your solutions by knowing what NOT to do. You remember when you were in school and you took a multiple choice test and there were two answers that looked right and one that made you say “I know that shit ain't right”, and you then guessed between the other two (I used to do that all the time by the way). This is the prudence that I speak of. Without this judgement you could find yourself replaying the same mistakes over and over, because you do not know what is right or wrong.

So I attempted to answer my own question. While racking my brain I understood why people were giving me that “Ohh Damn” face. Upon my long deliberation I only managed to come up with one counter, and that was EXPECTATION.

Expectations can get you in a lot of trouble. Man, I can give you a dissertation on how man times I have disappointed myself with “high expectations”. At any rate, as it applies to a relationship I think that expectations must be layed out to one another open and honestly. So each one of you know where each other stands.

Therefore, you can cover yo ass when it comes to your partner trying to check you, or on the flipside your partner can constitute checkin yo ass, if you don’t carry your weight. I must admit, that us fellas seem to fall short of doing this, and often get checked, (and for the record it has happened to me many many times lol) I have since adopted this theory of expectations in my personal relationship repertoire, and would suggest you do the same.

I think that due to expectations, pressure may be cast on that person to meet those expectations, and quite frankly some people are better suited to be girlfriends and boyfriends, then husbands and wives.

So let me know what you think the difference between a serious relationship and marriage is. Who knows, you may learn something in the process. My first real recollection of hip-hop videos came when I was about 6 years old. I can recall spending the night at my older cousin's house. We spent countless hours watching videos! She used to have videos on while she did her homework, as well as when she talked to her boyfriend on the phone. When her favorite song came on she would tell me to go turn the t.v. up. As i got off the couch, and followed my order she would belt out the national black phrase when it comes to liking a song " ohh... that's my shit!" ( Don't act like you dont use it). As I watched Positive K say " What ya man got to do wit me" and saw Kriss Kross wear backward jerseys and "Jump Jump" my intrigue with hip hop videos began. I may not have fully understood what was going on, but the music, and the images left a lasting impression on me.

The older I grew, so did my infacuation. By this time I was fully submerged in the world of Hype Williams, Paul Hunter, and Little X, as they visually captured some of my favorite songs. As the only child, I remember waking up in the summertime, with my parents already at work, and watching about 2 hours of MTV Beach House with Bill Bellamy. Back then MTV and BET did not play all the same videos. MTV played all the mainstream hip hop artists like Puff Daddy, LL Cool J, and Missy Elliot, so I would switch over to BET to watch the grimier low budget- but- equally as hot videos from artists like Wu Tang, Black Moon, Common, and The Lost Boyz. At night I even learned a thing or two about slow jams watching Video Soul, and Midnight Love. When my Jamaican side came out, I would watch the fine-as-wine host Rachel, walk up and down the beach introducing videos on Carribean Rythms.

On the weekends, while waiting to get my haircut in the barbershop I would get a double dose of Teen Summit, and the Rap City Countdown. I distinctly remember the episode when Bone Thugs- N- Harmony performed live for the first time and how juiced I was ( I am from Cleveland). Then I would watch the Rap City Countdown with my man Joe Clair, as he profiled some of the hottest artists and featured the top videos. I can remember how I use to try to guess which video would be # 1.

Shows like Direct Effect, MTV Beach House, MuchMusic (Canadian Station) MTV JAMZ, Rap City the Bassment, The Center, Cita's World, 106 & Park, and the infamous "UnCut" were the platforms that showcased all of my videos during my youth.

As an adult, videos have taken a new shape. With new technoly, and futuristic production, videos have been upgraded to full scale productions.
However. I love to watch MTVJams, and VH1 Soul, theses stations give you non stop videos, which feature the hottest videos of today, and also reconnect you to videos past.

In closing, videos are much more than a 4 minute clip. Videos tell stories, introduce fashions, and take you places in the world that you have never seen. Videos capture the essense of an era, taking you away from your existence and inserting you in that world. Long, Live, Hip- Hop Videos. I know every line to this scene. Kid N Play, Martin Lawrence, Robin Harris, Tisha Campbell, Pops from Wayans Brothers, Full Force, they don't make movies like this anymore, this movie is simply a classic! I don't care what anybody says, watching this movie makes me want to be at the party doing the cabbage patch right along with them. You can watch this joint with your girl, your boys, or just by yourself and it will still be funny. House Party 2: The Pajama Jammy Jamm, and Class Act are also some of my favorites, However, I must say that House Party 3 was not as good, and we are not even going to speak on House Party 4 with Marcus Houston, that was a disgrace to the House Party legacy! At any rate anybody who has ever been to one can truly appreciate a good ole house party. "You did'nt Play, You Just Got PLAYED OUT" LOL... Ya Dig. Let me first start off by saying that I do not go to the club very often. I am 23, and I like to have a good time, but I am begining to find out more and more that the club may not be an ideal place to achieve this. Case in point, I am in D.C. for Howard's Homecoming. I am at what is supposed to be one of the more poppin clubs in D.C.,( club will remain nameless). A rack of fine women, celebrity appearances, and good music, a recipe for fun right? WRONG... Call me crazy, but I for one come to the club to dance and have a good time with my people. I quickly found that this is not what others come to do. So I was in the club trying to do my thing, when I was constantly disrupted by people trying to walk around and be seen and shit! Now granted I took into consideration that I was at one of the biggest clubs in D.C., but everytime I attempted to get into a song I was being scooped or brushed to the side by either a single dude lookin for somebody to dance with, or a chain of girls holding hands, going God knows where. (Yeah you know that chain of 3 or 4 girls holding hands dancing to the music but not dancing with anybody in particular!) That chain really irks me. Oh and those thirsty dudes walking around trying to sneak up on innocent girls dancing, yeah that blows mine too! Lol.. I know we are in the club and those attention hungry people feel the need to be seen, but with all do respect, people like me who can give a damn about what, and who is looking my way are just trying to kick it. Maybe I am wrong, but If I am dancing, and I see that same chain of girls, and that same lame dude walking around, interupting me from doing me, I am going to get irratated. So let this serve as a public service announcement. LADIES: No holding hands in the club!!! AND FELLAS: please refrain from walking around the club aimlessly (that is not a good look, LOL... lololololol that shit is pathetic) at least dance in place and act like you doing something.
Ya Dig.

Method Man: Breakups 2 Makeups

One of Hype William's Finest. From the intellectual awakening, the self-exploring cultural explosion, and the undeniable individuality, there is no doubt that if I had a time machine, I would set it to 1925, and transport myself straight to the infamous Burrough. The character in which this time period represents, just speaks to me.

The Renaissance's life span was roughly 25 years, as it was acknowledged around 1919, and lasted until the mid 1930's. The Renaissance helped break down cultural barriers, which for the 1st time allowed African-Americans to freely express themselves, and people were actually paying attention. Centralized in Harlem, The Renaissance paved way to black expression, and in many ways, celebrated and introduced black culture to the world. During this time, The movement took place figuratively and literally. The Great Migration, which saw blacks moving up north, seeking opportunity, post the abolition of slavery. They migrated to towns like Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Philadelphia, and New York, where Harlem emerged as the cultural epicenter.

Due to the amount of new blacks in these areas, the appetite for black culture began to roar. Jazz and Blues music surfaced where stars headlined and sold out popular Harlem night spots like The Cotton Club, The Savoy Ballroom, and The Apollo. Black artists such as Aaron Douglas, Jacob Lawrence, and Augusta Savage, who captured their feelings and emotions on canvasses. Most of all, there was an intellectual influx. Playwrights, poets, authors, scholars, and political activists, had a collective hand in helping redefine the way that blacks perceived the world. Figures such as, Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Dubois, Alain Locke, and Claude McKay, to name a few, all made their respected contributions to this new found perspective.

So as much as I am an "80's baby", I also have a special place in my soul for The Renaissance. My generation was molded by the ideals of this time, So as you reflect on all the different elements that have influenced you and your surroundings, take a moment to pay homage to The Renaissance. Ya Dig.

Classic Scene

Classic Scene from the H.N.I.C. himself, Joe Clark. In the poetic words of my 2nd favorite rapper of all- time " You Can't Knock The Hustle". James has catapulted the once abysmal Cavaliers from collective Zero's to Hero's. From his much anticipated arrival into the league in 2003, the then 18- year -old made his presence felt early and often. The season prior to James's arrival the Cavaliers flaunted a record of 17-65, making them the worst team in the NBA. James quickly erased any doubt of his ability, as he led the team to an impressive 18 game turnaround, as the Cavaliers narrowly missed the playoffs. Along the way, he graciously snatched up R.O.Y. honors (Rookie of the Year). Since his arrival, the Cavaliers have progressively won more games in every year but one. James has done nothing but build to his legend, making the All-Star game every season after his rookie season, and winning two All-Star M.V.P's, two conference final appearances, one NBA Finals appearance, and was a catalyst on the Redeem Team that took the gold in Beijing.

I say all that to say this. In my humble opinion ,the MVP trophy is not won in a single season. It takes a track record of excellence to even be mentioned. James has not only solidified his name, but has captured the attention of fans domestic and abroad.

Statistically. We are not even gonna go there. You already know the numbers. Oh and the defensive intensity that once had people second guessing his K.I. (Killer Instinct), James has looked like a volleyball player this year, as he has repeatedly spiked and pinned unsuspecting players shots to the glass. Simply put, James has the most complete body of work of any player in the league, but don't let me tell it, the proof is in the pudding.

FYI-- Ibn Jasper

For all of you Lupe Fiasco heads, this one's for you. Truth be told, Ibn Jasper is a fresh, young Chicago based Image Consultant who has worked with both Lupe and Kanye. I say this because in 2008, the “black experience” comes in so many different forms. Whether you grew up in the burbs or, or grew up in the hood, you can not be blind to the fact that the “black experience” is diverse. We have gone from being enslaved, to being empowered.

As a youth, growing up in suburban Cleveland, my teachers differentiated me from the other black kids. For whatever reason, I was seen as the “good” black kid. The way I was treated was separate from the other “bad” black boys whose expectation may have not been as favorable from the teacher, as mine were.

I believe that as a result, somewhat of an “institutional divide” had been created. Everybody’s divide may have not come in school; however I do believe that with many of our people, we look at each other and don’t see a piece of ourselves, which creates this divide. The fact that someone grew up in a different neighborhood, drives a different car, listens to different music, or wears different clothes, should not be cause for partition. Nobody should have to prove that they are black enough.

Case in point, the next leader of our country, Barack Obama. I have already made up my mind that whether he wins the election or not, (and I am praying he does) that Obama is my leader. Even though he is a black man, whose experiences were wildly different from my own.

Obama grew up in Hawaii. He is the child of a Kenyan father, and a white American mother. Throughout his childhood he spent time in Indonesia, before returning to Hawaii, where he stayed until he graduated high school. Upon graduating he moved to Los Angeles to attend Junior College, and from there he transferred to Columbia University where he finished his undergraduate career. He later attended Harvard Law School where he was elected the first black president of the Harvard Review. He received his J.D. from Harvard University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1991.

I tell you his story not to brag and boast his accomplishments, but to tell you of his “black experience” while Obama’s story may be wildly different from yours, does that make him any less black? That is why I was outraged upon hearing people in the black community, as well as black leaders talk about how Obama was not” black enough”, as if there is a checklist of things you must have to be black.

This is the divide that I speak of. The fact that people look at Obama, and don’t see the similarities, but much rather point out the differences. When I see Obama I see a strong black man, with an equally strong black woman, raising a strong black family. Furthermore, for the first time I see a piece of me in the highest position in America, and maybe the world. That reality alone, trumps any differences that me and this brotha might have!

The fact of the matter is, black people in this country have overcome slavery, segregation, discrimination, and a rack of other “ism’s”. So with all things considered, a black man standing on the threshold of doing what many considered would never happen, should be a time for black people to unite, right? Well I will let you answer that for yourself.

In closing, this divide can be very harmful to us, if we continue to let it manifest through America, and the black community in specific. Let the presence of Obama be a reminder to us all that we are a great people, who have come from all different backgrounds, and are capable of doing anything we put our minds to. After all, no matter what situation you come from, or what situation you are in, we are all one in the same.

Stay Up,

Austin Weatherington
